First poll, hur hur~
It's funny. I was bored procrastinating, then the randomest thought occurred to me...
Hey self,
How American are you?
Cuz really, I'm not racially(wow that was a bad typo) an American, but I'm not a die-hard PRican, either. I'm a total gringa, and my Passport says "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" right on it. (That's thanks to the 'Jones Law', btw. PR History has taught me something, how 'bout that?)
I did a quick search in Google and all the quizzes for 'How American Are You?' are cliche 'are you a gun-toting, beer drinking, red-state dude who speaks American' style quizzes, so...
Help me out! What do you think defines 'an American'? Do you wear 'sneakers' and pronounce Z as zee not zed? (But actually less cliche would be better)
I might turn it into a meme or something.
[Poll #1341227]
s-sob. I really need a paid account. So many cool icons, so little space to put them in...
EDIT: You know what's really American? The TV I watch. As far as TV's concerned, I am American in that I can understand almost every popculture reference on the big network's shows. And yet (this is what clinches it for me) a lot of these big networks block Puerto Rico from their online content! Pisses me off like you wouldn't believe!

I do wear "sneakers" and say "zee" instead of "zed," and I wear jeans almost every day which apparently isn't very common in other countries? I'd consider myself an American, but I'm from New England, which has a very different culture than, say, the Bible belt. I guess American-ness is nebulous, but then again, so would any-other-country-ness, and it's just easier to see the differences between people in your own country than in people outside of it? (Ugh, that sounds horrible, but you know what I mean, right?)
I think another important thing is the kind-of cultural touchstones of American-ness. Like, everyone here knows "We the people," and "Four score and seven years ago," and the general idea behind how the elections work and what the Grand Canyon is and stuff, &c., &c.
Damn, this is really hard. Inarticulate Meep is inarticulate.
typo'd
Wearing jeans a lot isn't normal? All I wear is jeans, too. I get what you mean, though. To us, the US seems really different and diverse (the East, the West, the South, etc...) while other countries might think Americans are all either rednecks or willing to sue someone over a sneeze. (I'm suddenly reminded of hetalia)
Ah, yeah. I blame TV for my "We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their Creator with certain, unalienable rights..." and that's where it gets fuzzy. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?
It's a hard subject to define... one "cultural identity" :\
Re: typo'd
I know when I was in Japan especially, but also sometimes when I was in China and England I felt horribly under dressed because all of the other girls were wearing skirts or at least nice slacks and shoes and I was like "... hi, I'm wearing denim shorts and sneakers!"

Oh, well I always wear long jeans. Short and me just don't agree with each other, nor skirts for that matter. I've only recently started using actual shoes instead of sneakers.

well, you're not American, so what do you think of when you think 'ohlol, look. an American'?

I DON'T REALLY KNOW. There are so many different kinds of people who live in America so I can't say someone who speaks like a hick because you got you sanfran!homos rubbing their nipples and then you got the multimillion CEO's loling behind their solid gold desks. so I don't know.

Then there's also the latinos who aren't latinos but don't want to be Americans, and the hillbillies who work at wal-mart and the geeks who make computers and the asians who inhabit each chinatown.
You get all this and more, in America!

GOOD LUCK WITH THAT~ I SUGGEST YOU MAKE MENTION OF ANY AND ALL "IT'S FOR MY FUTURE" REFERENCES AS YOU CAN~
lol, here in PR people leaving is normal. The best college is 3 hours away, so the smart people tend to leave.

*cough*My PNP-ness is showing*cough*Because honestly, the way things are right now is screwed up. It isn't the fault of the US (although, even I admit it hasn't gotten better since they invaded) because it honestly started with the Spaniards.D: I really don't like it when PR~os start saying that we should go back to "la madre patria, Espa~a" (Yes, there are people who say that, I'm not making it us) because honestly... they fucked us over and didn't even care until the last minute, when they decided that we were a lost cause anyway, so what the hay~!
I also really don't like it when people say that "if we become a state we'll lose out culture" Because it's a big fat lie. I'm sure even Blanca agrees with me here (even though she's totally nacionalista).
I don't think I'm "100% American". I love being a Puerto Rican too but, let's face it... I'm really glad I left for college. I'm sorry but, I just really had to get off the island.
Oh yah, by the way, there's a loophole in the Jones law in which we could actually request a Puerto Rican passport. Only like two people have 'em though.
..... long post is long

Either way, Diana! This is not about status! 'Dis about personal identity! I, for one, love the island. Sure, it's messed up and full of drug lords, I'd have spent my school years no other way! To be honest, I wouldn't leave if the education here were better, or if I could actually leave my parents and stay at the same time. It sucks that I feel that way, cuz I look so un-Puerto Rican that I feel like I won't repres'nt when I go to college! I don't wanna be a drinkin' PRican, but I still wanna share my culture, you know?
I remember Sara Pintado telling us that about the passports. Hehe 8D

I'm not exactly the most Puerto Rican either, but as long as you know the history, still know your Spanish, and know about your culture, you can still spread it. So what if you don't drink, it's ok. lol, I don't really drink either. You're 100% Puerto Rican, even if you don't believe it!
